Singapore has started distributing vaccines to curb and control the spread of COVID-19. Here’s what you should know about the vaccine, in two minutes.
How do vaccines work?
Vaccines help us develop immunity by training our bodies to recognise the virus and produce the antibodies that protect us from the virus. In the case of the COVID-19 vaccine that will be available in Singapore, two doses will be required, given 21 days apart.
Why should you vaccinate?
The more people are vaccinated, the harder it is for the virus to spread amongst communities.
Who’s not eligible for the vaccine?
Pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, and individuals under the age of 16 should wait for more data to be made available before taking the vaccine.
Is the vaccine safe?
All vaccines permitted for use in Singapore must comply with the World Health Organisation guidelines and must be assessed by the Health Sciences Authority to ensure safety and efficacy standards are met.
Are there side-effects?
Most people don’t have any serious side effects from vaccines. Some people may experience side-effects such as fever, redness and swelling at the injection site. These are common side-effects and expected as part of the body’s natural response towards build immunity against COVID-19.
What about serious side effects?
Serious side effects from vaccines are extremely rare. For example, if 1 million doses of a vaccine are given, 1 to 2 people may have a severe allergic reaction. Getting vaccinated is much safer than getting the diseases vaccines prevent.
Does the vaccine really work?
It has a high vaccine efficacy of 95% in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 disease in vaccinated persons aged 16 years and older. Its safety profile is consistent with other established and registered vaccines.
I’m still worried about side effects after getting vaccinated. What can I do?
In the very rare event that a vaccine causes a serious problem, insurance companies such as Prudential offer complimentary coverage against the side effects of your COVID-19 vaccination. You may consider getting one of these coverages for additional peace of mind.
