What is a saliva-based PCR test?

A saliva-based PCR test is a MOH-approved non-invasive COVID-19 test kit that helps determine whether you are COVID-19 positive or negative through the collection of saliva in a tube.

This test kit does not require the conventional swabbing of the back of your nose and mouth, thus reducing any discomfort or fear due to the swab being inserted through your nasal cavity.

This test is available to travellers departing from Singapore, and travelling to countries that accept saliva-based PCR test. Please check your destination country’s entry requirements before booking for the test.

What is a PCR swab test?

A PCR test is the standard COVID-19 test kit used to determine whether you are COVID-19 positive or negative through the collection of sample by swabbing of the back of your nose and mouth.

This test is available to travellers departing from Singapore travelling to any countries that require a COVID-19 PCR test for entry.

Things you should know before booking for a pre-departure PCR test

Do I need to do anything in preparation for the test?

For saliva-based PCR test, avoid drinking, eating, chewing gum, smoking, brushing your teeth, or using mouthwash for at least an hour before your saliva-based PCR test, or it may yield inconclusive results.

For standard PCR swab test, there is no specific preparation needed.

When should I book an appointment for a PCR test?

As a general guide, travellers should aim to have their sample collected for testing at least 48 hours before their flight, and not more than 72 hours to have a valid cert. Please check your destination countries’ requirements to ensure that you comply with the respective countries’ guidelines for arrival. You can also check the Safe Travel website for additional departure information

Is this available for anyone who's travelling?

Saliva-based PCR test is only available for people travelling to countries that currently accept and recognise the saliva-based pre-departure test results. Please check your destination country’s entry requirements before booking for this test.

The standard PCR swab test is available for travellers departing from Singapore travelling to any countries that require a COVID-19 PCR test for entry.

Can my child take the saliva-based PCR test?

As the procedure is non-invasive, the saliva-based PCR test is suitable for kids and the elderly. The same test can be administered for children and adults alike.

Do note that saliva-based PCR may not be suitable for kids under the age of 3, as they may not be able to produce adequate sputum for sample processing and testing. If our nurses are unable to obtain an adequate amount of saliva from your child during the sample collection procedure, they will do a standard PCR swab test as a backup.

How can I be sure that I did the sample collection correctly?

For saliva-based PCR test, a nurse will be present to observe and ensure that your saliva collection technique is correct and adequate for the purpose of the saliva-based PCR test. During the procedure, if our nurses are unable to obtain an adequate amount of saliva they will also do a swab test as a backup.

For the standard PCR swab test, the nurse will be administering the swab for sample collection.

What if I can't produce the amount of saliva needed for the test?

In the event that the nurse is unable to obtain an adequate sample for a saliva test during the procedure of collecting the saliva sample, our nurses will also do a swab test as a backup. We will perform a standard PCR test instead, at no additional charge.

Will the saliva-based PCR test affect the accuracy of my results?

According to a study of migrant workers in Singapore last year, saliva samples were actually more sensitive than nasal swab samples for diagnosing patients who are asymptomatic or have mild Covid-19 infection. Our laboratory partner Lucence has summarised the results from that study in this handy infographic.

Can I do a saliva test for entry into Singapore?

Saliva-based PCR test is currently not accepted for entry into Singapore. This may change in the future. Please refer to the Safe Travel website for further information. You can also see a full list of requirements here.

How do I know if my appointment is confirmed?
